Red Wing, MN (March 8, 2023) – Every year, students flock from across the country to study musical instrument repair and building at Minnesota State College Southeast in Red Wing, Minnesota. To share their talents with the community, the college hosts an annual musical variety showcase called Strings, Winds & Brass. This year’s concert is scheduled for Sunday, March 26, 2023 at 4 pm at the historic Sheldon Theatre in downtown Red Wing.
Tickets are available from the Sheldon Theatre box office (www.sheldontheatre.org or 651-388-8700). Adult tickets are $15; students are only $5.
Auditions for Strings, Winds & Brass took place in early February where acts were judged by a panel of local arts and entertainment experts. They selected 16 acts to perform in this year’s concert. True to the show’s theme, a wide variety of musical instruments and styles will be presented, from hurdy-gurdy and alphorn to solo piano, a capella singing, and rock band.
On the classical side, there will be brass and woodwind solos, duos, quartets, quintets, and even a horn octet. Folk music groups include the professional Celtic ensemble Bardmageddon; singer-songwriters Carriage House; and Flatt & Square, the college’s faculty-staff-alumni trio.
Besides the enjoyment of forming ensembles to rehearse together, half the fun is in coming up with highly original band names. You won’t want to miss the rare opportunity to see JT and the Knockpinners, The Semi-Aquatic Mammal Duo, The Four Saxophonists of the Apocalypse, or The Vaguely Canadian Brass!
